Summary: Scholem's letter to Salman Schocken, written in 1937 and published for the first time in 1979, is regarded as one of the most important documents on the purpose of his Kabbala studies. Now a much earlier text has come to light in the Scholem archive in Jerusalem, written in Munich in 1921, which is almost identical with the letter to Schocken. The article edits the new text and compares it with Scholem's letter to Bialik (1925), his letter to Schocken (1937), and his "Ten Unhistorical Aphorisms on Kabbala" (1958).
