Despite the difficulty of resurrecting this long-forgotten form, modern scholarship has accomplished much in the effort to understand it, especially following the 1920 discovery of many nanxi scripts. This article examines this scholarship and tell us what is now known of nanxi, including its music, prosody, role types, acting, makeup, and props. Mei Sun, who holds a Ph. D. from the University of Hawai'i, teaches in the Department of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore.
